Trip 1 Highlights - June 2015
This was my first ever trip to Guatemala. It was never on my bucket list, but I have come to love it after being exposed to the culture and some beautiful locations and great people by Rob. This is one of the places where Rob developed his Spanish fluency. As a teacher he would bring groups of kids to study Spanish during spring breaks for several years and prior to moving to Baltimore Rob lived here developing school curriculum. It's during this time that he developed a working relationship with the non profit organization Starfish (Estrella de Mar) that is focused on advancing education for indigenous Mayan girls and women.
Lake Atitilan
| Clear view of the 2 dormant volcanoes on the Lake |
| My Panaroma view of the Lake during my morning run |
| Not your typical bus stop; There are 11 small towns and villages along the perimeter of the lake and the best way to travel from town to town is by the boats that navigate from stop to stop |
| Great restaurant that requires water taxi to get to |
| The scene at the restaurant, good food and good scene |
Our Amazing Eco Hotel Room
This unique hotel is completely built into the side of the mountain with stunning views of the lake.
Out and About
| When in Rome... We caught a ride back to town after or morning run |
| This is the more common form of transportation at the Lake |
| I loved the street market at the Lake |
| Got one of my favorite pieces made by a local jeweler |
| I love that I find Jamaican influence no matter where I am in the world |
Exploring Antigua - Its not just an island in the Caribbean
The "Chicken Bus" is the common form of long distance travel -
Think Greyhound in the U.S. |
The architecture in Antigua makes you feel like you have transported in time
A little night life action at a local Tequila Bar
| Not the best capture with the iPhone, but while having drinks on this roof top bar one of the volcanoes in the back began to erupt. |
Trip 2 Highlights - March 2017
For this second trip to Guatemala I took advantage of the days Rob had to work to attend language school. I'm hoping to get good at conversational Spanish.
This trip happened just a few short months after the election of Donald Trump. It is always interesting to see how people around the world react to American Politics. In one of our favorite restaurants we found this sign posted prominently.
Top experience for this trip was hiking the Pacaya Volcano and roasting marshmallows over a hot crater.
